A new study from the University of Illinois School of Medicine shows that tadalafil (Cialis®) is not only effective for treating erectile dysfunction in men but also may be effective in improving blood flow to the penis. This is the first time the FDA has approved this new medication to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).
The study was published in the
, an online peer-reviewed scientific journal. The study involved 18,000 men taking daily Cialis (which is also sold under the brand name Cialis®) and 18,000 men taking placebo. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: placebo, Cialis, or a combination of both drugs. The trial was double-blind, and researchers measured blood levels of tadalafil, an antihypertensive drug, at baseline and after 3 months of treatment with Cialis, and the effect of the drug on erectile function at 6 and 12 months.
“This is the first time the FDA has approved tadalafil (Cialis®) to treat erectile dysfunction,” said lead author Dr. Steven Nissen, M. D., the Chief Medical Officer of Eli-Lilly. “This is the first time the FDA has approved Cialis to treat erectile dysfunction, so we’re excited to see what this new treatment looks like.”
In this study, patients were treated with either daily Cialis (or a combination of Cialis and tadalafil) for one year. Patients were also randomized to receive either daily Cialis (or a combination of Cialis and tadalafil) for two years, or placebo. Both doses of Cialis and tadalafil were taken for at least six months before their next blood pressure (BP) measurement was scheduled. Blood pressure was measured at baseline and at two-month intervals.
Results showed that daily Cialis was significantly more effective at reducing blood pressure, compared with placebo. A lower dose of tadalafil was also effective at reducing blood pressure, and a combination of tadalafil and Cialis was similarly effective. The results were consistent with previous research showing that Cialis is safe and well tolerated in clinical trials. The researchers concluded that “[i]n addition to the combination of Cialis and tadalafil, this treatment would be safe and well tolerated in patients with mild to moderate ED.”
A new study in the journalEur Respir Jreported that tadalafil is not only effective for treating erectile dysfunction, but also for improving the ability of men with ED to obtain and maintain an erection. Researchers also found that men who took tadalafil had a “much faster and longer-lasting erection” compared with men taking the placebo.
“Our findings may lead to the development of new drugs that could potentially be used to treat ED,” Dr. Nissen said. “These new treatments may represent a new avenue for treatment that improves sexual function in men with ED.”
Tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, is approved by the FDA to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Studies have shown that tadalafil can help improve erectile function in men with ED. The FDA also approved tadalafil to treat PAH, but its approved indication for this use has not been met.

Dr. Nissen said this drug is safe and effective and may be the next step in the FDA’s efforts to approve other treatments for ED.
